Although Simoneau never sang the role of Orphee on stage, he did star in a lavish 1961 television version produced by Radio-Canada and presented here for the first time on DVD. Simoneaus's frequent singing partner, luminous soprano Pierrette Alerie (also his devoted wife as of 1946), brings strength and refinement to the role of Eurydice. Amour is beautifully portrayed by distinguished soprano Claire Gagnier, while esteemed conductor and teacher Otto-Werner Mueller leads the Orchestre de Radio-Canada.
