Aida - Verdi DVD
Beginning in 1956, annual seasons of Italian opera, performed by the greatest Italian Opera stars of the 1950's, '60s, and '70s, were presented in Japan under the series title Lirica Italiana. Nearly all the productions were telecast, and the series as a whole represent the largest and most important archive of live operatic performances prior to the 1980s. Though the setting is Japan and the chorus is made up of local singers, the Lirica Italiana series provides invaluable documents of Italian operas performed with all-italian principals, vivid demonstrations of the glories of the Italian vocal and dramatic style of a bygone era. This 1973 Aida stars two of the most celebrated singers of their time, tenor Carlo Bergonzi and Fiorenza Cossotto, both in prime form here, In true Italian tradition, their voices are as affective in the lyrical passages calling for velvety beauty of tone as in the fiery dramatic sections of the opera. The title role is sung by Orianna Santunione, a dramatic soprano of remarkable power, evenness, and intensity. The other principal singers in this performance are Gianpiero Mastromei, a commanding Amonasro, and Ivo Vinco, and imposing and dignified Ramfis, The forces of the NHK Symphony Orchestra are under the direction of conductor Oliviero De Fabritiis, who backs up the singers with an emotionally charged account of the masterful score. The beautiful and Iavish sets and costumers are by the renowned designer Pier Luigi Pizzi.
