Rosalyn liureck in Sti Petersburg
Quite unexpectedlys in the Winter of 1995, I received an invitation from Russia to perform in St.
Petersburg in the following June/July at the time of the famous Russian White Nights. A festival was
to be built around my performances. At first I did not see how I could accept. I was touring in the
United States for five weeks with only a short period in between before conducting and lecturing in
EnglancL Russia wanted me to perform and lecture during that period, and continually sent faxes
persuading me to come, saying, ''All Russia is waiting for you.''
In the end, this invitation proved irresistible to me because St. Petersburg is the city of my musical
ancestry. My first teacher was Sophia Brilliant-Liven, a great Russian pianist who had studied with
Anton Rubinstein and became his assistant. I worked with her from the age of mne and one half until
almost fourteen, During those four years I heard her speak of Anton Rubinstein virtually all the time;
her apartment was filled with photographs of him and the great pianists of the then-named Petrograd
Conservatory. The original name, St. Petersburg, has now been returnec!, after having been renamed
successively Stalingrad and Leningrad, Brilliant-Liven transferred to me the great tradition and high
standards of musicianship and piano playing of Anton Rubinstein, and this formed a very firm and
significant foundation for my musicianship and technique.
My experiences in St. Petersburg, where Anton Rubinstein had founded its Conservatory, constituted
for me a very deep emotional return. Although I Gad never been to St. Petersburg, the significance it
has had for me throughout my life, beginning with the profound memories of my early training, has
now come full circle. After a lifetime of study and scholarly and performing experience throughout
the world, I returned with much emotion to a scene and setting that was the origin of my musical
foundation and basic artistic standards.
