Canadian lyric tenor Leopold Simoneau (1916-2006) is remembered for the distinctive beauty of his voice as well as the nobility of his interpretations, which combined classical poise and a feeling of fidelity to the score with a compelling sense of personal involvement. Although Simoneau never sang the role of Orphee on stage, he did star in a lavish 1961 television version produced by Radio-Canada and presented here for the first time on DVD. Simoneaus's frequent singing partner, luminous soprano Pierrette Alerie (also his devoted wife as of 1946), brings strength and refinement to the role of Eurydice. Amour is beautifully portrayed by distinguished soprano Claire Gagnier, while esteemed conductor and teacher Otto-Werner Mueller leads the Orchestre de Radio-Canada. Please note: Some film sprocket noise (sometimes referred to as motorboating ) can be heard in portions of the soundtrack. VAI has done its best to minimize this artifact in the only surviving source of this telecast.
